An interview coming up? Hone your communication skills.

An interview coming up? Hone your communication…

In interviews it’s a good idea to keep your ears and your mouth under careful control.

You need to be an active listener: listen in order to understand, don’t half listen whilst planning your next interjection.

You either focus and pay attention or you pay the price of interview failure! Use your ears to glean information so that you understand precisely what the interviewer is saying.

When it comes to your mouth, rather than talking too much and waffling away nervously with lots of erms, umms, ahs, stumbles, mumbles and hesitations interspersed with ‘like’, ‘actually’, ‘ye know’, ‘sort of’ and ‘really’, learn to talk less and say more.

There is an important distinction between talking ad nausea and communicating succinctly yet with verve, sparkle and energy so that your interviewer not only understands the point you are making but also gets a feel for your enthusiasm, attitude and personality.
