OBJECTIONS TO BUSINESS COACHING
Talking to SME owners recently about their growth, development, and the need for possible assistance from business mentors and coaches (sic. us, the Gilbro Group) there have been several recurring negative objections, from the understandable to the bizarre.
Examples:
I’ve had several coaches up to now. They’ve all been useless.
What were your expectations? Had they clearly defined their role?
I had a coach. He ran off with all my money.
I have no answer for this one.
He ran off with my wife.
Perhaps you might try a female coach this time? (My pathetic attempt at humour).
They’re a waste of money.
What makes you think that? Perception based on …?.
I can’t afford one.
How much are you prepared to INVEST in your business?
I’ve got a clear idea of where I want to go, what I want to do. I don’t need anyone.
I thought that once, and when it all went pear-shaped, I had nowhere to turn.
I’ve already got two (or even more) coaches, thank you.
Why?
Good coaches will show you what to do and how to do it, but they will not do it for you. They SHOULD help you and hold your hand, so to speak, along the way. I dion't think you need more than one, unless they specialise in different spheres.
Not everyone is coachable.
There are some intransigent people with a closed mind-set. They might say “Done that, tried it, it didn’t work”, or “I know about all that. I don’t need a coach”. They do not want to take advice; all ideas have to come from them or they have no value. These are the ones indulging in what we call vanity projects and are uncoachable.
So we’re choosy about who we work with. You have to want to succeed, be open to working differently, you have to be keen and prepared to work hard and, above all, you have to be ambitious. Together, we create a road map – and you’re on your way. Unstoppable!
